We’re getting kicked out!
Come send off the venue!
You may have noticed recently the big “for lease” signs out the front of Giant Dwarf. To give you an update, we are sad to inform you that after six years we are being forced out of 199 Cleveland St by a massive rent hike. (Full statement here)
We are really disappointed because we know what we have created in those six years is something really special. We have been an incubator for emerging talent and new formats, and become the regular home of events like Story Club, the monthly storytelling night hosted by Ben Jenkins and Zoe Norton Lodge, improv-sensation the Bear Pack (Steen Raskopoulos and Carlo Ritchie), comedy role-playing night Dragon Friends and the hugely popular series Queerstories created by Maeve Marsden. We watched audiences continue to grow as comedians like Aunty Donna, Anne Edmonds and Rhys Nicholson became household names. Our diverse program has seen the likes of Wil Anderson, Andrew Denton, Celeste Barber, John Safran, Daniel Kitson, Kitty Flanagen and Tim Minchin have all performed at GD, as have musicians Kasey Chambers, Tim Rogers, Angus & Julia Stone, Sarah Blasko and Paul Dempsey as well as cutting-edge classical artists like ACO Principal Violinist Satu Vänskä and world-renowned Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto.
BUT it’s not all bad news, we have an insane final month of programming lined up at 199 Cleveland st, (seriously check it out) culminating with a huge final show on 7 March. AND Giant Dwarf Theatre intends to continue operating. Negotiations to transfer to another location in central Sydney are underway, and details of the new venue will be announced shortly.
Courtyard bar opens at 6:30pm for a 7:30pm start. Pop in before the show for a drink and a mingle!
