Giant Dwarf Theatre presents: Tiny Tunes
Tiny Tunes is the new music event series for GD at their brand new home in Surry Hills. In the same way that we’ve been supporting emerging comics over the years, we want to celebrate the history of our new home and give some love to the amazing artists who bring us music.
Performing Saturday 24th July, 8:00pm – Akala Newman
Akala Newman is a Wiradjuri/ Gadigal woman who fuses her eclectic escapist sound with surreal pop, a splash of sexy and a hint of house. Her lyrics and voice of honey are effortlessly vulnerable. They can Stab like a knife or melt you like fire. Influenced from her teenage years by the wake of JOY, Tove Lo, Fka Twigs, Ziggy Ramo and Halsey, her music is flooded with melodic nostalgia, contrasted with electric cynicism.
Akala released her first debut single in 2019, “Heart For Free”, followed by “Shine on Me” in 2020. She then produced, directed and choreographed her first Music Video in 2020, “Burnt For You”,with an all First- Nations cast, representing the Blak body as beautiful, powerful and resilient.
In 2021, Akala released, “Spell on Me” ft. BLACX, as a sneak peak into her EP. When Akala is not writing or daydreaming she is assistant producer for Moogahlin Performing Arts, Artist Educator at Museum of Contemporary Arts, and Intimacy Co-coordinator for Intimate Scenes Australia. Her music is a reflection of her work; passion for Blak representation, storytelling, love and wellbeing.
“Wiradjuri / Gadigal woman and super talented singer, songwriter, actor and activist, Akala Newman’s got a lot of feathers in her cap. Her beautiful voice and dramatic music is just the sorta thing you need to add to your playlists ASAP. Check out her beautifully choreographed music video for her latest single “Burnt For You”.
